What does a balance-sheet stress test actually test?
Whether the company can meet its obligations under adverse but plausible conditions, rather than whether it is profitable. The questions are about survival mechanics: what falls due and when, what cash and committed facilities are available to meet it, which covenants could be breached and what happens if one is, and how quickly assets could be converted to cash. A profitable business can fail this test and an unprofitable one can pass it.

Because a company does not choose the credit conditions it refinances into; it chose the dates years earlier.
