What SOX membership means

Membership confirms that as of the annual reconstitution reference date, this company satisfied all of Nasdaq's eligibility criteria simultaneously: listed on Nasdaq Eligible Exchanges, classified under ICB as Semiconductors or Production Technology Equipment, market cap at least $100 million, monthly trading volume at least 1.5 million shares for six consecutive months, trading history of at least three months, and listed options available.

Membership also confirms that among all eligible companies, this company ranked within the top 30 by market capitalization at the reference date.

What membership does not confirm: membership makes no statement about future performance, valuation, competitive position, or whether the company remains a compelling investment at any given price. A company can be a valid SOX constituent and simultaneously be overvalued by any measure of fundamental analysis.

Membership can and does change at each annual reconstitution. Companies that grow into the top 30 of the eligible universe enter; companies that fall out are removed. Between reconstitutions, the membership is fixed regardless of market cap movements.

Data rights and official sources

Swoopr publishes the constituent list and methodology explanation based on publicly available Nasdaq information and cross-checking against SOXQ ETF holdings. Swoopr does not publish index weights, which are proprietary Nasdaq data requiring a data license from Nasdaq Global Index Watch.

For official current constituent data and weights, use Nasdaq Global Index Watch at indexes.nasdaq.com.

SOXQ (Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF) holdings are publicly disclosed and can serve as an approximate cross-reference for constituent identification, but SOXQ holdings are not identical to the canonical index composition due to ETF replication timing and operational differences.

About the 2026 reconstitution

The 30 companies shown reflect the pre-reconstitution basket as of September 4, 2026.

Nasdaq's annual reconstitution for 2026 takes effect after the third Friday of September 2026.

Following the effective date, Swoopr will update this page to reflect any changes to the component list.

The annual reconstitution process evaluates the full eligible universe using the last trading day of July as the reference date, ranks eligible companies by market cap, and selects the 30 largest. Companies entering the top 30 for the first time are added; companies falling outside the top 30 are removed.

Frequently asked questions

How many companies are in the SOX index?

SOX contains 30 component companies as of the September 4, 2026 pre-reconstitution basket. The annual reconstitution effective after the third Friday of September 2026 may add or remove members. Nasdaq targets approximately 30 components, but the exact count reflects the number of companies that qualify under all eligibility criteria and rank in the top tier by market capitalization.

Can non-U.S. companies be in the SOX index?

Yes. SOX requires a U.S. listing, not U.S. headquarters or incorporation. As of September 2026, the index includes TSMC (Taiwan-headquartered, NYSE-listed as an ADR), ASML (Netherlands-headquartered, Nasdaq-listed), NXP Semiconductors (Netherlands-headquartered, Nasdaq-listed), Arm Holdings (UK-headquartered, Nasdaq-listed), and GlobalFoundries (Cayman Islands-incorporated, Nasdaq-listed). The July 6, 2026 methodology update clarified eligibility to Nasdaq Eligible Exchanges, formally covering NYSE-listed securities.

How often does SOX constituent membership change?

SOX membership is reviewed and potentially changed once per year at the annual reconstitution. The reference date is the last trading day of July; the new composition takes effect after the third Friday of September. Between reconstitutions, no companies are added or removed, regardless of market cap movements or business changes. Quarterly rebalancing adjusts weights but does not change which companies are in the index.

Where do I find official SOX component weights?

Official component weights are proprietary Nasdaq data available through Nasdaq Global Index Watch at indexes.nasdaq.com. Index weights require a Nasdaq data license to access and redistribute. SOXQ ETF holdings are publicly available and can serve as an approximate reference, but they reflect the ETF's replication strategy rather than the canonical index weights. Swoopr does not publish Nasdaq-licensed weight data.

Why are semiconductor equipment companies included in SOX?

SOX's eligible universe covers two ICB subsectors: Semiconductors and Production Technology Equipment. The inclusion of equipment companies reflects the index's design goal of representing the full semiconductor supply chain rather than only chip designers. Companies like Applied Materials, Lam Research, ASML, KLA, Nova and Teradyne are classified under Production Technology Equipment and qualify on that basis. Without equipment companies, the index would omit a significant portion of semiconductor industry capital spending and revenue.
