Direct Answer

The FTSE/ATHEX Large Cap is a rule-based measurement of Greek large-cap equity benchmark, maintained by FTSE Russell/Athens Exchange. Like every index it owns nothing: it is a number produced by applying a published weighting formula to a selected list of companies, revised on a schedule the provider sets.

What this index covers

The FTSE/ATHEX Large Cap covers Greek large-cap equity benchmark, within the Greece market. FTSE Russell/Athens Exchange defines which securities are eligible, how they are selected from that pool, and how much each one contributes to the published number.

The index name does not state a fixed company count, so the number of constituents follows the eligibility rules rather than a target.

How constituents are weighted

Weighted by price times shares in issue, adjusted by an investability factor for free float and a capping factor. No company may exceed 10% of the index. Capping is applied twice a year, in two steps: if the first round pushes an uncapped company above 10%, that company is capped as well.

The weighting method is the single biggest driver of how an index behaves. Two indexes covering the same market can diverge for years purely because they weight differently, which is why comparing index levels without knowing the method tells you very little.

What qualifies for inclusion

The 25 largest Athens Exchange companies by full market capitalisation that pass the investability screens. Shares must be on the ATHEX main market, only the primary share class counts, and ETFs, investment holding companies, convertible preference shares and call auction securities are excluded. Free float must be above 15% and each stock must pass liquidity tests.

Eligibility rules are the part of an index most readers never look at and the part that decides what it can possibly measure. A screen that excludes a whole sector, or admits only one listing venue, shapes the result far more than any day of trading does.

How long a listing must exist first

Securities must have a minimum trading record of 30 working days since official non conditional trading began, and must have traded on at least half the business days in each of the preceding six calendar months.

A seasoning rule is why a large new listing does not appear in an index the week it starts trading. It is a deliberate lag, and it means an index can under-represent a fast-growing part of the market for months at a time.

When the membership is revised

Reviews use end of April and end of October data, with average market capitalisation taken over the last month of that period. Changes take effect after the close on the third Friday of June and December. A non constituent rising to rank 20 or above enters, and a constituent falling to rank 31 or below leaves. A five company reserve list is published.

Reconstitution is the one date an index changes shape by design rather than by price. Funds tracking it have to trade toward the new membership, which is why the schedule matters to anyone holding the tracker rather than only to the provider.

The rule that surprises people

Ranking uses the average market capitalisation over the final month of the evaluation period rather than a single closing value, and the index reviews only twice a year.
