Section 6: Risk factors (0-4 points)

Risk factors are threats to the thesis that are acknowledged and evaluated but do not currently break it. The difference between a risk and a break condition is that a risk might or might not materialize, while a break condition is the specific threshold at which you exit.

  1. Are the top three risks to the thesis identified and ranked by severity? (1 point)
  2. Is the probability and magnitude of each risk estimated, even roughly? (1 point)

Add up your points across all six sections. The maximum is 25.

0-10: Thesis not ready

Significant structural gaps exist. The thesis either lacks the core components of a testable claim (low Section 1 score), cannot identify what would prove it wrong (low Section 2 score), or both. Do not commit capital at this score. Work through the structural gaps first, then re-run the checklist.

11-17: Proceed with smaller position

The thesis has meaningful structural elements but identifiable gaps. Open a half-size or quarter-size position and use the monitoring period to address the low-scoring sections. Set a target date for re-running the checklist, and commit to increasing position size only if the score improves to 18 or above.

18-22: Adequate for standard position

The thesis passes the structural test at a standard level. Open the position at planned size. Note which sections scored below their maximum and plan to address them at the first review date. A 20 out of 25 is a solid thesis, not a perfect one.

23-25: Well-prepared thesis

The thesis is structurally complete. Every section has been addressed with specificity. This score does not guarantee the thesis is correct, but it means the structure is in place to know when it is wrong and to act on that information quickly.
