At age 9, the education horizon in a 529 plan is 9 years. The account should be moving toward a moderate equity allocation if using an age-based portfolio. UGMA/UTMA accounts continue with high equity exposure on a 56-year retirement runway. Starting at age 9, some children earn verifiable income from creative work, tutoring, or farm labor.
