Relative Volume (RVOL) Explained

Relative volume measures how today's trading activity compares to historical norms for the same time period — one of the most reliable filters for separating routine price movement from genuinely unusual market activity.

What Relative Volume Measures

Relative volume (RVOL) compares today's volume — or a portion of today's volume — to the average volume for the same stock at the same time of day over a lookback period. Common lookback windows are 10, 20, or 30 trading days. The result is a ratio: an RVOL of 1.0 means the current pace of trading exactly matches the historical average. RVOL of 2.0 means twice the typical volume; RVOL of 0.5 means the stock is trading at half its usual pace.

RVOL is used primarily to distinguish between routine price movement — which may be coincidental noise — and unusual activity that may reflect genuine participant interest, an institutional order, or a news-driven catalyst. A price that moves without volume behind it behaves differently than a price move accompanied by a sharp increase in participation, and RVOL quantifies that difference more precisely than raw volume alone can.

Unlike raw volume, RVOL is context-sensitive. A stock that normally trades 5 million shares per day showing 10 million shares at 10 AM is qualitatively different from a stock that normally trades 50 million shares showing 10 million shares at 10 AM. Both have the same absolute volume number, but their RVOL values tell opposite stories. The first stock is running at twice its typical pace and generating unusual interest; the second is running at one-fifth its normal pace and is essentially quiet. Raw volume cannot make that distinction; RVOL does it automatically.

This context-sensitivity is what makes RVOL a practical scan filter rather than just a curiosity. Running a scan for raw volume above a fixed threshold requires different cutoffs for every stock in the universe, scaled to its typical activity level. Running a scan for RVOL above a single threshold — say, 2.0 — identifies which securities are meaningfully more active than their own normal, regardless of how large or small that normal is in absolute terms.

The Four RVOL Formulas

Several distinct RVOL calculations exist, and they answer slightly different questions. Understanding which formula your scanner or charting software is using changes how you interpret the number it displays.

Full-Day RVOL

RVOL = Today's total volume ÷ Average daily volume over the lookback period

This is the simplest form. It takes the total shares traded so far today and divides by the historical average for a full trading day. The limitation is that it can be misleading early in the session: at 10 AM, a stock may have traded 1 million shares, which looks modest against a 5-million-share daily average — but if typical 10 AM volume is only 400,000 shares, that 1 million is actually running at 2.5 times normal pace. Full-day RVOL would show 0.2, masking the real acceleration. This formula is most reliable closer to the end of the session when today's total volume has had most of the day to accumulate.

Time-Adjusted RVOL

RVOL = (Today's volume up to time T) ÷ (Average volume from market open to time T over the lookback period)

This is the most commonly used intraday form. Instead of comparing today's partial volume to a full-day average, it compares today's volume up to the current moment against the historical average volume up to that same moment across the lookback period. This produces an apples-to-apples comparison at any point during the session — it tells you whether the stock is running ahead of or behind its typical pace for this specific time of day. Most professional scanning tools that display intraday RVOL are using this approach or a close variant.

Projected RVOL

Projected volume = (Today's volume up to time T) × (Trading minutes remaining + Trading minutes elapsed) ÷ Trading minutes elapsed

This uses the time-adjusted RVOL concept to estimate what the full-day volume will be if the current pace continues. After computing projected full-day volume, RVOL is then calculated against average daily volume. The result answers a forward-looking question: if today continues at its current pace, will this be a high-RVOL day overall? This is useful early in the session when time-adjusted RVOL may be high but only a small fraction of the day has elapsed — confirming that a pace is likely to result in an unusual full-day reading, rather than just a brief spike that fades.

Hypothetical example — for education only.

If a stock has traded 2 million shares in the first 65 minutes of a 390-minute session, the projected full-day volume is 2,000,000 × (390 ÷ 65) = 12,000,000. If the 20-day average daily volume is 5,000,000, projected RVOL is 12,000,000 ÷ 5,000,000 = 2.4 — well above the 2.0 threshold many traders treat as elevated.

Bar-by-Bar RVOL

For each price bar — 1-minute, 5-minute, or any other interval — bar-by-bar RVOL compares that bar's volume to the average volume for that same bar time across the lookback period. A 9:35 AM bar is compared only to other 9:35 AM bars from prior sessions, not to any other time of day. This method is useful for identifying which specific intervals within the session are generating unusual activity, and it is often displayed as a histogram beneath the price chart in charting software that supports it. A bar with RVOL of 5 stands out visually and immediately identifies when during the session the surge in participation occurred.

Why Platforms Show Different RVOL Values

Two platforms can display different RVOL for the same stock at the same moment and both be internally correct — they are measuring different things. Understanding the sources of variation prevents misinterpretation.

The practical implication is always to understand what a specific platform's RVOL computation assumes before relying on its output, particularly when comparing readings across tools or verifying a signal. Asking the platform's documentation which formula variant it uses, what lookback period it defaults to, and whether pre-market volume is included takes less than a minute and prevents systematic misinterpretation of every RVOL reading thereafter.

Premarket RVOL

RVOL during the pre-market session — typically 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM ET — compares pre-market volume to the average pre-market volume for the same time range over the lookback period. The mechanics are the same as intraday time-adjusted RVOL; only the session window differs.

Because pre-market volume is generally much lower than regular-session volume for most stocks, even a moderate spike in pre-market interest can produce a very high premarket RVOL.

Hypothetical example — for education only.

A stock trading 100,000 shares in the pre-market when its average pre-market volume is 5,000 shares shows RVOL of 20 — a striking number, but its significance depends entirely on whether the underlying activity is meaningful. That 100,000 shares is 20 times normal, but if 100,000 shares represents a single institution adjusting a position rather than broad retail and institutional participation, its predictive value for the regular session differs substantially from the same number generated by many independent participants responding to news.

High premarket RVOL often precedes high regular-session RVOL and can be an early signal of a news catalyst — an earnings report, a regulatory decision, or a corporate announcement released before the open. However, pre-market price action can be unreliable as a predictor of regular-session direction. Liquidity is thinner, bid-ask spreads are wider, and the participant composition differs — automated market-making is reduced, retail participation is lower, and institutional activity around pre-market catalysts does not necessarily reflect the full-session consensus once regular trading begins. A high pre-market RVOL reading deserves attention but warrants cross-referencing with the news driver and regular-session open behavior before acting on it.

RVOL and VWAP Interaction

VWAP — the volume-weighted average price — is computed using actual traded volume. Each transaction during the session contributes to the average in proportion to its size: a 10,000-share print at $50 has ten times the weight of a 1,000-share print at $50. The result is a price level that reflects where most of the day's capital has transacted, making it a natural reference point for institutional traders evaluating their execution quality and for short-term traders assessing whether price is cheap or expensive relative to the session's center of gravity.

RVOL interacts with VWAP through the volume inputs that drive its calculation. When RVOL is high, each VWAP interval captures more volume, pulling the average toward where the heaviest activity is occurring. In high-RVOL sessions, VWAP is a more statistically meaningful anchor than in low-RVOL sessions, because more independent participants are contributing to the average across more transactions. A price deviation from VWAP during a high-RVOL session carries more informational weight — more market participants have established positions near that average price — than the same deviation during a low-RVOL session where VWAP is computed from far fewer transactions and may not represent a durable consensus level at all.

Traders who use VWAP as a mean-reversion or entry-timing anchor often filter for high RVOL as a prerequisite condition. The logic is straightforward: VWAP is a meaningful level when the volume behind it is substantial enough to represent real participant positioning. On a low-RVOL day — say, a quiet summer Friday with half the normal participation — VWAP is computed from so few transactions that price could depart from it for purely mechanical reasons unrelated to any genuine shift in supply or demand. Adding a minimum RVOL threshold filters out those quiet-session VWAP signals, leaving only the ones generated when meaningful volume is confirming the level's validity.

The inverse also matters: RVOL spikes that occur while price is far from VWAP may indicate that a gap or directional move is attracting participation, which can sustain the move. RVOL spikes that occur near VWAP may indicate that the level is acting as a magnet where both buyers and sellers are active, which can produce choppy, range-bound behavior rather than a clean trend. Neither is inherently better or worse as a trading context — they simply require different approaches to entry and exit.

RVOL in Scanners and Screening

RVOL is one of the most commonly used primary filters in stock scanners because it efficiently identifies which securities across the entire market are generating unusual activity, without requiring the user to know in advance which specific stocks to watch. Rather than monitoring a fixed watchlist, an RVOL scan surfaces candidates dynamically based on real-time participation data.

A basic RVOL scan typically includes:

RVOL alone does not indicate direction. A stock can have RVOL of 5 while falling as sharply as it would while rising — the ratio only tells you that unusual participation is occurring, not which way price is heading. Combining RVOL with directional filters sharpens the signal considerably:

Scanner configurations vary significantly by trading style and time horizon. A momentum day trader running a pre-market scan might combine RVOL above 3.0 with a minimum gap of 5% and a minimum average daily volume of 1 million shares. A swing trader might run an end-of-day scan for RVOL above 2.0 on the weekly timeframe to identify which stocks finished the week with unusual institutional interest. The underlying filter logic is the same — unusual activity relative to normal — but the inputs and combination differ by use case.

Common False Signals and Limitations

RVOL is a useful filter but not a standalone trading signal. Understanding the conditions that consistently produce elevated RVOL without meaningful underlying interest prevents unnecessary action on noise.

What RVOL level is considered high?

There is no universal threshold, but practitioners commonly treat RVOL above 2 (twice the typical volume for the current time of day) as elevated and worthy of closer attention. RVOL above 5 is often described as very high and may indicate news, institutional activity, or a squeeze dynamic. The appropriate threshold depends on the stock's baseline volatility and the trading style — a day trader scanning for momentum setups may require higher RVOL than a swing trader looking for early signs of interest.

Does high RVOL confirm a price breakout?

RVOL is a volume confirmation signal, not a directional signal by itself. High RVOL accompanying a price breakout above a key level is widely interpreted as confirming genuine participant interest. High RVOL during a price decline can signal distribution rather than accumulation. Neither direction of price movement is implied by RVOL alone — it simply indicates that more participants than usual are transacting.

Is RVOL useful for long-term investors?

RVOL is primarily a short-term trading tool because it compares current intraday or daily volume to recent historical averages. Long-term investors are less concerned with whether today's volume is twice the 20-day average and more concerned with fundamentals, valuation, and multi-year trends. That said, a sustained increase in a stock's average daily volume can signal growing institutional interest that may be relevant even to longer-time-horizon participants.

How many days should the RVOL lookback period include?

Common choices are 10, 20, and 30 trading days. A shorter lookback (10 days) is more responsive to recent shifts in a stock's activity level but more volatile. A longer lookback (30 days) is more stable but may include periods of lower or higher activity that aren't representative of current conditions. Many day traders prefer 10-day RVOL for intraday scanning; swing traders more commonly use 20-day or 30-day averages.

Can RVOL be computed for options or futures?

The same general concept applies — comparing current volume to a historical average for the same contract or strike — but the implementation differs. Options RVOL is complicated by the large number of strikes and expiries across which volume is distributed, and by the fact that the "normal" volume for a specific option series can be very low, making the ratio highly sensitive to small changes. Futures RVOL is conceptually simpler but still requires consistent treatment of rollover periods.
