# CD Ladder Builder

Split a total amount evenly across CD ladder rungs and see an illustrative first-year interest estimate.

Enter a total amount, a number of rungs, and an assumed flat APY to see each rung's amount and one year of illustrative interest, per rung and in total. This is a simplified planning illustration, not a maturity-by-maturity quote.

## Direct Answer

> A CD ladder splits a total amount evenly across a chosen number of rungs: rung amount = total amount ÷ number of rungs. This calculator illustrates one year of interest per rung and in total using a single assumed flat APY across every rung. It's a simplified planning illustration, not a maturity-by-maturity quote: real CD ladders use different maturities, rates, early-withdrawal terms, and insurance considerations per rung.

Any rounding remainder from an uneven split (typically a cent or two) is placed on the final rung and disclosed separately below, so nothing is silently misstated.

This is a simplified planning illustration: it assumes one flat APY across every rung for one year. Real CD ladders typically use different maturities, rates, early-withdrawal terms, callable features, and deposit-insurance considerations (FDIC or NCUA coverage limits) per rung. Use this as a planning baseline, not a quote.

## Methodology

The calculator applies the steps below directly to your inputs:

Rung amount = Total amount ÷ Number of rungs

Rung interest (1 year) = Rung amount × Assumed APY

Total interest (1 year) = Sum of every rung's interest

- **Rung amount** is the total split evenly across the number of rungs you choose, rounded to the nearest cent.
- **Rounding remainder**: when the total doesn't divide evenly, the last rung absorbs the leftover cent(s) so every rung's amount always sums back exactly to your total amount. This is disclosed above rather than silently rounding the total down or up.
- **Illustrative interest** applies the single assumed APY you enter to each rung's amount, as if that rung earned that flat rate for one full year. It is not tied to any specific bank, credit union, or CD term.

### Assumptions and limitations

- Uses one assumed flat APY across every rung. Real CD ladders commonly use different maturities and different rates per term (a 1-year CD and a 5-year CD rarely share the same rate).
- Does not model early-withdrawal penalties, callable CD features, or rate changes at renewal/rollover.
- Does not account for FDIC or NCUA deposit-insurance coverage limits, which can matter for very large totals split across institutions.
- Does not account for taxes on interest income.
- Not a forecast, a guarantee, or a recommendation for any specific bank, credit union, or CD term.
- All calculation happens locally in your browser using the inputs on the page; nothing is fetched from or sent to a server.

## FAQ

### What is a CD ladder?

A CD ladder splits a total amount of money across multiple certificates of deposit (CDs), often with staggered maturity dates, instead of putting it all into one CD. This calculator illustrates the simplest version: an equal split across a chosen number of rungs, with a single assumed flat APY, to estimate one year of interest per rung and in total.

### How is each rung's amount calculated?

Rung amount = total amount ÷ number of rungs. When the total doesn't divide evenly, the small rounding remainder (typically a cent or two) is placed on the last rung so the rungs always add back up exactly to the total amount you entered, rather than silently understating or overstating it.

### Does this tool model real CD maturities and rates?

No. This is a simplified planning illustration using one assumed flat APY across every rung. Real CD ladders typically use different maturities, different rates per term, early-withdrawal terms, callable features, and deposit-insurance considerations (FDIC or NCUA coverage limits) that this tool does not model.

### Is the interest estimate a guaranteed return?

No. The interest figures are an illustrative, single-year projection at the flat APY you assume, not a quote from any specific bank or credit union. Actual CD rates vary by institution and term, and this tool does not account for early-withdrawal penalties or rate changes at renewal. It is not a forecast or a recommendation.
