# Nasdaq-100 Index: Companies, Methodology & Investor Guide

## Direct answer

The **Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX)** tracks 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, using modified market-capitalization weighting. As of September 2026, the index contains **102 securities representing 101 corporate issuers** (Alphabet contributes two share classes). It is not the Nasdaq Composite and not an exchange: it is a rules-based equity benchmark administered by Nasdaq Global Indexes.

## What is the Nasdaq-100 Index?

The **Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX)** is designed to measure the performance of 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It uses a modified market-capitalization weighting framework rather than simple equal weighting. The index can contain more than 100 securities because more than one eligible share class of the same company may be included, and 2026 methodology changes created additional mechanisms for qualifying new listings and corporate-action additions.

As of **September 11, 2026**, the current Nasdaq index pages report **102 securities** for the Nasdaq-100 family. This Swoopr library maps those securities to **101 corporate issuers** because Alphabet has two index share classes, GOOGL and GOOG. The constituent registry is maintained separately from evergreen company articles so index changes do not require rewriting an entire dossier.

The Nasdaq-100 is not the Nasdaq Composite. It is also not an exchange. It is a rules-based equity index administered by Nasdaq Global Indexes and focused on large Nasdaq-listed non-financial companies.

## Why investors follow the Nasdaq-100

The Nasdaq-100 is widely used as a benchmark for large growth-oriented and innovation-heavy companies. Technology is a major part of the index, but the roster also contains consumer, health-care, industrial, utility, energy, telecommunications and basic-materials businesses. The result is a benchmark with meaningful exposure to semiconductors, cloud computing, digital advertising, e-commerce, biotechnology, medical devices, electric power, railroads, restaurants, retail, travel and aerospace.

The index is useful for education because its companies represent very different business models. NVIDIA and Micron sell semiconductor products but have very different economics. Costco and Walmart both sell merchandise, but membership economics change the way Costco should be analyzed. Microsoft, Adobe and Workday all sell software, yet cloud infrastructure, creative applications and enterprise systems create different cost structures and growth drivers. Constellation Energy and Exelon both participate in electricity markets, but one is primarily a generator while the other is a regulated transmission and distribution utility.

Swoopr's Nasdaq-100 library is therefore structured as a **business-research encyclopedia**, not a quote board.

## Current universe: 102 securities, 101 issuers

The name "Nasdaq-100" describes the index objective; it should not be interpreted as a promise that a public data feed will always show exactly 100 ticker lines. Share classes and corporate actions can produce a different security count.

For implementation, Swoopr maintains two layers:

1. **Security registry.** One record per index security/share class. The current package has 102 security records.
2. **Issuer registry.** One research dossier per operating company. The current package has 101 issuer records because Alphabet's Class A and Class C shares share one operating-company dossier.

This prevents duplicate company content while preserving accurate index membership.

## How the Nasdaq-100 works

Nasdaq describes the index as a measure of the largest Nasdaq-listed non-financial companies. Financial companies are excluded under the index methodology. Eligibility, ranking, seasoning, liquidity, corporate actions and weighting are governed by the official methodology rather than by editorial judgment.

### Modified market-capitalization weighting

The index is not a pure market-cap-weighted portfolio. Company size matters, but the methodology applies constraints intended to limit excessive concentration. For investors, the practical consequence is that the largest companies can have major influence without the index being identical to an unconstrained capitalization ranking.

Index weights change with prices, share counts, rebalances and corporate actions, so any weight figure needs an as-of date.

### 2026 methodology changes

Nasdaq updated the Nasdaq-100 methodology effective in 2026. Among the important operational changes are a rank-based quarterly review process and a fast-entry mechanism intended to allow exceptionally large new Nasdaq listings to enter more quickly when they meet the rules. These changes are important because they make the constituent set more responsive to very large newly public companies.

The methodology remains the source of truth. Any Swoopr article describing eligibility should link to the current methodology rather than duplicating every rule in prose that may later become stale.

## Recent 2026 constituent changes

The 2026 roster changed substantially.

### June 22, 2026 quarterly changes

Nasdaq announced five additions effective before the June 22 market open:

- Astera Labs (ALAB)
- CoreWeave (CRWV)
- Nebius Group (NBIS)
- Rocket Lab (RKLB)
- Teradyne (TER)

The same review removed Charter Communications, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Insmed, Verisk Analytics and Zscaler.

### Honeywell separation

Honeywell Aerospace (HONA) became a separate public company in June 2026 after its separation from the former Honeywell structure. The remaining parent became Honeywell Technologies (HON). The research library therefore treats HONA and HON as separate issuers with separate economics, products, risks and histories.

### SpaceX entry

Space Exploration Technologies (SPCX) entered the index during 2026 under the newer fast-entry framework. Its inclusion is a useful example of why the index can temporarily carry more securities than a casual reading of "Nasdaq-100" might imply.

### Electronic Arts removal

Electronic Arts was removed after going private in August 2026 and was not replaced immediately. That event illustrates why the index roster must be maintained as a data product instead of being embedded permanently into hundreds of articles.

## Sector structure

This package uses reader-friendly sector labels while preserving the ability to map to Nasdaq's ICB classification in the structured data layer.

| Sector | Current issuer count |
| --- | --- |
| Technology | 43 issuers |
| Industrials | 16 issuers |
| Consumer Discretionary | 12 issuers |
| Health Care | 9 issuers |
| Consumer Staples | 8 issuers |
| Telecommunications | 6 issuers |
| Utilities | 4 issuers |
| Energy | 2 issuers |
| Basic Materials | 1 issuers |

The counts above are issuer counts, not security-line counts. Alphabet is counted once at the company level.

## How to research a Nasdaq-100 company

A useful company page should answer more than "what does the company sell?" Swoopr's framework asks:

- What does the company actually do?
- Who pays it and why?
- Which product or service creates the customer relationship?
- Which part of the business creates the profit?
- What causes revenue to rise or fall?
- What does the company have to spend to grow?
- Which metrics reveal changes early?
- Where does pricing power come from?
- Which competitors attack the same profit pool?
- Which suppliers, customers or regulators have bargaining power?
- What would prove a favorable investment thesis wrong?
- Which quarterly signals deserve consistent monitoring?

Every current issuer below has a complete primary dossier plus supporting pages for business model, metrics, competition, risks and strategic evolution.

## Nasdaq-100 versus Nasdaq Composite

The **Nasdaq Composite** includes a much broader universe of Nasdaq-listed securities. The **Nasdaq-100** is a selective large-company benchmark with explicit eligibility rules and a non-financial focus. A company can be in the Nasdaq Composite without being in the Nasdaq-100.

For Swoopr's information architecture, these indexes should have separate hub pages and separate constituent registries. Company pages can link to every index in which the security currently participates.

## Nasdaq-100 versus S&P 500

The Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 overlap substantially among large U.S. technology and growth companies, but they are constructed differently. The Nasdaq-100 is tied to Nasdaq listing and excludes financial companies. The S&P 500 covers large U.S. companies across exchanges and includes financials, with eligibility and selection governed by S&P Dow Jones Indices.

The practical implication is that the Nasdaq-100 has a different sector mix and concentration profile. It should not be treated as a substitute name for "large-cap U.S. market."

## What the index does not tell you

Index membership is not an endorsement of business quality, valuation or future return. A company can enter because it satisfies methodology rules while facing substantial operating risks. A company can leave because of a corporate action even if its underlying business remains useful to study.

Likewise, a large index weight says nothing about whether the stock is attractively priced. Weight is a portfolio-construction fact, not an investment recommendation.

## Research by business model

The Nasdaq-100 becomes easier to understand when companies are grouped by economic model rather than only by sector. Examples in this package include:

- semiconductor designers, memory manufacturers and equipment makers;
- enterprise software and cloud platforms;
- digital advertising and marketplace businesses;
- subscription media and telecommunications;
- branded consumer goods and retailers;
- biotechnology and medical-device businesses;
- regulated utilities and power generators;
- freight, aerospace and industrial infrastructure;
- payroll, payments and financial workflow software;
- travel and local-commerce marketplaces.

Each company dossier links to Swoopr's Business Model Atlas so readers can compare companies with similar economic engines even when they sit in different conventional sectors.

## Index risk and concentration

The Nasdaq-100 can become concentrated in a small set of very large companies and common economic themes. Correlated exposures may include AI infrastructure spending, semiconductor demand, cloud capex, digital advertising, consumer technology and long-duration growth expectations.

That does not mean every constituent behaves the same way. The correct approach is to identify shared drivers and then study company-specific differences. A chip-equipment supplier, a cloud platform and a power generator can all benefit from data-center investment while having very different margins, capital needs and failure modes.

## What to monitor at the index level

A practical index dashboard should include:

1. current constituent and security count;
2. concentration among the largest weights;
3. sector and industry mix;
4. additions and removals;
5. turnover from corporate actions;
6. aggregate earnings and sales trends where sourced;
7. valuation data only from a maintained provider;
8. breadth across constituents;
9. contribution to index returns by company and sector;
10. major methodology updates.

Every value should carry an as-of date.

## Accessibility and data design

The company directory must work without client-side JavaScript. Search and filtering can enhance the experience, but the full constituent table should exist in server-rendered semantic HTML. Tables require captions and proper headers. Interactive charts require text summaries and accessible data tables. No critical information should be conveyed only through color.

## Frequently asked questions

How many companies are in the Nasdaq-100 right now?

The September 2026 package contains 101 corporate issuers represented by 102 securities. The security count is higher because Alphabet has two share classes in the index. Index rules and corporate actions can change the count, so Swoopr stores the current universe in a separate registry.

Why can the Nasdaq-100 have more than 100 securities?

More than one eligible share class of a company can be represented, and corporate-action or fast-entry mechanics can temporarily expand the basket.

Are financial companies in the Nasdaq-100?

The index is designed around large Nasdaq-listed non-financial companies. The official methodology defines the applicable eligibility rules and classification treatment.

Is the Nasdaq-100 the same as QQQ?

No. The Nasdaq-100 is an index. QQQ is an exchange-traded product designed to track the index before fees and tracking differences. The index and an ETF that follows it are different legal and financial objects.

Is every Nasdaq-listed company eligible?

No. Listing venue is only one part of eligibility. The methodology includes classification, size and other requirements.

Does joining the Nasdaq-100 mean a stock is a good investment?

No. Index inclusion is not an investment recommendation. It says that a security meets index methodology requirements at that time.

How often should Swoopr update the roster?

The registry should be checked after every announced review, corporate action, fast-entry event, merger, delisting, share-class change and methodology update. A scheduled daily verification is appropriate for the data layer even though evergreen editorial prose needs fewer changes.
