# FTSE ADX 15 Index: What It Measures and How It Is Built

## Direct Answer

> The FTSE ADX 15 Index is a rule-based measurement of top 15 companies listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange by market capitalisation, maintained by FTSE Russell/ADX. Like every index it owns nothing: it is a number produced by applying a published weighting formula to a selected list of companies, revised on a schedule the provider sets.

## What this index covers

The FTSE ADX 15 Index covers top 15 companies listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange by market capitalisation, within the UAE market. FTSE Russell/ADX defines which securities are eligible, how they are selected from that pool, and how much each one contributes to the published number.

The name states a target of 15 companies. A target is not a guarantee of the exact count on any given day: corporate actions, dual share classes and pending additions all move the real number around it.

## How constituents are weighted

Free float adjusted with no foreign ownership limits. Weights are capped each quarter, in March, June, September and December, so the largest company stays at or below 33% and every other company at or below 18%.

The weighting method is the single biggest driver of how an index behaves. Two indexes covering the same market can diverge for years purely because they weight differently, which is why comparing index levels without knowing the method tells you very little.

## What qualifies for inclusion

Drawn from the FTSE ADX General Index and limited to ordinary shares on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange Main Market. Shares ranked 31st or lower by free float market capitalisation are dropped, and the rest are ranked by 20 day median traded value. Investment trusts and fund vehicles are not eligible.

Eligibility rules are the part of an index most readers never look at and the part that decides what it can possibly measure. A screen that excludes a whole sector, or admits only one listing venue, shapes the result far more than any day of trading does.

## How long a listing must exist first

New issues with fewer than 20 days of trading are left out of the review universe. A new listing worth 1% or more of the General Index can enter after its fifth trading day, and if that lifts the count to 16 the constituent with the lowest 20 day median traded value is removed.

A seasoning rule is why a large new listing does not appear in an index the week it starts trading. It is a deliberate lag, and it means an index can under-represent a fast-growing part of the market for months at a time.

## When the membership is revised

Reviewed semi annually in March and September on market data from the second Friday of February and August. Changes take effect after the close of the third Friday of the review month. A security enters by rising to 11th place or above and leaves by falling to 19th or below.

Reconstitution is the one date an index changes shape by design rather than by price. Funds tracking it have to trade toward the new membership, which is why the schedule matters to anyone holding the tracker rather than only to the provider.

## The rule that surprises people

The index can hold more than 15 securities after a review: when one company has more than one share line selected, an additional company is chosen so that 15 companies are kept.
