# Portfolio Construction Scenarios

Portfolio construction decisions, such as the choice of asset allocation, rebalancing frequency, factor tilts, and leverage, produce different outcomes in different market environments. A portfolio that is optimal under one correlation regime can perform poorly when correlations shift. These scenarios trace how specific portfolio construction choices interact with market conditions and where the conventional assumptions can break down.

Scenario Analysis

## Direct Answer

> Portfolio construction scenarios test whether specific allocation, rebalancing, or concentration decisions hold up under different market conditions. The 60/40 portfolio performs well when stock-bond correlation is negative; it fails in stagflation when both fall simultaneously. Factor tilts like value or small-cap provide long-run return premia that can underperform for years before delivering. Understanding which construction choices are robust versus environment-dependent is the goal of these analyses.

## Common questions

### How often should a portfolio be rebalanced?

Rebalancing frequency involves a trade-off between staying close to target allocation (which argues for frequent rebalancing) and minimizing transaction costs and taxes (which argues for less frequent rebalancing). Common approaches include calendar rebalancing (annually or semi-annually), threshold-based rebalancing (trigger when any asset class drifts more than a set percentage from target), or a combination of both. Studies show that the difference in long-run outcomes between annual and quarterly rebalancing is small; transaction costs and tax efficiency matter more than the exact frequency.

### What is the difference between diversification and de-correlation?

Diversification means holding many different assets; de-correlation means those assets move independently. Holding 100 stocks in the same sector is diversified but not de-correlated. Adding an asset class whose returns are driven by different economic forces (real estate, commodities, foreign equities) provides both diversification and de-correlation. In market stress, correlations between asset classes often rise toward 1.0, reducing the de-correlation benefit at exactly the wrong time. Assets that maintain low correlation during market stress, not just on average, provide the most reliable portfolio protection.

- [Portfolio When a Hedge Stops Working?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-a-hedge-stops-working/)
A portfolio loses protection when a hedge stops working, because the position that was meant to offset losses no longer moves the way it was expected.
- [Portfolio When a Portfolio Is Rebalanced During a Crash?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-a-portfolio-is-rebalanced-during-a-crash/)
A portfolio that is rebalanced during a crash buys stocks that have fallen and sells assets that held up, which restores its target risk and can add to returns.
- [Portfolio When an Investor Never Rebalances?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-an-investor-never-rebalances/)
A portfolio that is never rebalanced drifts toward its best-performing assets, which raises risk over time, because a mix that began as 60% stocks can become.
- [Portfolio When Cash Becomes 30% of a Portfolio?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-cash-becomes-30-of-a-portfolio/)
A portfolio that holds 30% in cash is less volatile and has less loss in a downturn, but it gives up long-run growth and can lose purchasing power.
- [Portfolio When Correlations Converge Toward One?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-correlations-converge-toward-one/)
A portfolio loses much of its diversification when correlations converge toward one, because assets that usually move differently begin to fall together.
- [Portfolio When Duration Risk Becomes Concentrated?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-duration-risk-becomes-concentrated/)
A portfolio becomes vulnerable to interest rate moves when duration risk becomes concentrated, because many bonds or funds fall together when rates rise.
- [Portfolio When Home-Country Bias Becomes Extreme?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-home-country-bias-becomes-extreme/)
A portfolio with extreme home-country bias is exposed to a single economy, currency and market, so it does well when the home market leads and suffers when it.
- [Portfolio When One Stock Becomes 25% of a Portfolio?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-one-stock-becomes-25-of-a-portfolio/)
A portfolio where one stock becomes 25% depends heavily on that company, so a fall in its price can cause large losses to the whole portfolio.
- [Portfolio When Portfolio Volatility Doubles?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-portfolio-volatility-doubles/)
A portfolio whose volatility doubles can see losses and swings twice as large, which raises the chance of selling at a low and can sharply change the outcome.
- [Portfolio When Stock-Bond Correlation Turns Positive?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-stock-bond-correlation-turns-positive/)
A portfolio of stocks and bonds loses its cushion when the stock-bond correlation turns positive, because bonds no longer rise when stocks fall.
- [Portfolio When Stocks](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-stocks-and-bonds-fall-together/)
A balanced portfolio suffers on both sides when stocks and bonds fall together, as in 2022, because inflation and rising rates reduce bond prices at the same.
- [Portfolio When Technology Becomes Half of a Portfolio?](https://www.getswoopr.com/scenario-analysis/portfolio-construction-scenarios/what-happens-to-portfolio-when-technology-becomes-half-of-a-portfolio/)
A portfolio where technology becomes half of the holdings depends heavily on one sector, so it can outperform in a technology boom but faces large losses if.
