# Multi-Variable Scenario Combinations

Single-variable scenarios explain one mechanism at a time. Markets rarely move in isolation: rising rates often coincide with slowing growth; a strong dollar often accompanies commodity weakness; high inflation and slow growth together create stagflation. These multi-variable scenarios trace how two or more simultaneous shifts interact, where they reinforce each other and where they cancel each other out, and what the net effect is for different portfolio types.

Scenario Analysis

## Direct Answer

> Multi-variable scenarios analyze the combined effect of two or more simultaneous market changes on a portfolio. The interaction matters because variables can reinforce each other (rising rates and falling earnings both reduce equity valuations) or partially offset each other (a commodity hedge gains value as commodity prices rise, offsetting losses in the rest of the portfolio). Understanding the interaction requires examining each channel separately before adding them up.

## Common questions

### What is stagflation and why is it difficult for investors?

Stagflation is the combination of high inflation and stagnating or negative economic growth. It is difficult for investors because the standard hedges conflict: stocks are poor inflation hedges when earnings growth is falling, bonds are poor investments when inflation is high, and cash loses purchasing power in real terms. Commodities and TIPS have historically provided some protection in stagflation, but the magnitude of the stagflation and its duration determine whether standard portfolio adjustments are sufficient.

### How do rising rates and dollar strength interact for international investors?

When US interest rates rise, dollar-denominated assets become more attractive to foreign investors, increasing demand for dollars and strengthening the currency. For a US investor holding international equities, this is a double negative: the foreign equities may be under pressure from global rate rises, and the currency return is negative as the dollar strengthens against the foreign currency. Currency hedging eliminates the second channel but adds a cost based on the interest rate differential between the US and the hedged currency.
