# International Market Guides

International equity markets differ from US markets in settlement conventions, corporate governance standards, liquidity, currency exposure, and tax treatment of dividends and gains. This section covers the major investable markets with guides that explain the mechanics a US-based investor needs to understand before adding international exposure, from ADR mechanics to withholding tax treaties.

International Investing

## Direct Answer

> Investing in international markets introduces currency risk, political risk, different accounting standards, and tax withholding on dividends. A US investor buying a German stock through an ADR still owns the underlying shares, but the dividend is paid in euros and converted, withholding tax may apply at the German rate, and the price moves with both the stock and the EUR/USD exchange rate. Understanding these differences is the starting point for international allocation.

## Common questions

### What is the difference between developed and emerging markets?

Developed markets (US, Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada) have mature capital markets, strong property rights, established regulatory frameworks, and deep liquidity. Emerging markets (Brazil, India, China, Mexico, Indonesia, and others) have faster economic growth potential but also higher political risk, less regulatory predictability, lower liquidity, and more volatile currencies. Index providers like MSCI and FTSE use specific criteria around market accessibility, settlement, and liquidity to make the classification, and the same country can be classified differently by different providers.

### How does currency risk affect international equity returns?

When a US investor holds a foreign stock, the total return in USD equals the local-currency stock return plus the currency return (positive if the foreign currency strengthened against the USD, negative if it weakened). A Japanese stock that returned 10% in yen but the yen fell 8% against the dollar returned approximately 2% in USD terms. Investors can hedge currency risk through forward contracts or by choosing currency-hedged ETFs, but hedging has a cost that can exceed the currency effect in low-volatility periods.
