# Crypto Exchanges: Research the Venue Before You Research the Coin

A centralized crypto exchange can simultaneously act as trading venue, custodian, payments intermediary, staking provider, lender, and legal counterparty. Those functions create risks separate from whether any asset rises or falls. These profiles evaluate the venue layer: who operates it, which entity serves a user, where it is available, what it controls, and what can fail.

## Direct Answer

> A crypto exchange is not just a place where prices appear. A centralized exchange can simultaneously act as trading venue, custodian, payments intermediary, staking provider, lender, and legal counterparty. Those functions create risks that are separate from whether Bitcoin, Ether, or another asset rises or falls. Swoopr exchange profiles evaluate the venue layer: who operates it, which legal entity serves a user, where it is available, what it controls, how withdrawals work, what regulations apply, and what can fail.

## Common questions

### Why research the exchange, not just the token?

Most exchange comparisons begin with supported coins or advertised fees. That puts low-value variables ahead of existential ones. A platform can offer hundreds of assets and still be a poor place to hold them if the user cannot verify custody terms, withdrawals, jurisdiction, or solvency evidence. Research should start with the venue layer: legal entity, jurisdiction, custody, withdrawal path, and market structure before evaluating fees or features.

### What is the seven-layer exchange model?

The brand layer is the consumer-facing name. The legal-entity layer is the company contracting with the user. The regulatory layer covers licenses attached to that entity. The custody layer describes who controls keys. The market layer describes the execution model. The banking layer covers how fiat enters and leaves. The exit layer describes how and when users can withdraw assets. A platform is not fully researched until all seven can be described.

### Do these profiles rank exchanges?

No. Swoopr does not collapse security, licensing, liquidity, fees, custody, and product breadth into a single ranking score. That would hide trade-offs. Each profile reports evidence by dimension using statuses such as Verified or Needs Review, and exposes the source and timestamp behind each field.
